NDSU Celebrates Harvest BowlMyron Johnsrud, who recently ended a 37-year career in higher education, will receive the 2002 Agri-business Award as part of the annual Harvest Bowl activities at North Dakota State University Nov. 1 and 2. Johnsrud retired earlier this year as Director, Extension and Outreach, National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. He began his extension career as a county extension agent with NDSU in 1965. After earning a doctorate degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1969, he was appointed Director of Personnel and Program Development with the NDSU Cooperative Extension Service. Two years later he was appointed Director of Staff Development, Extension Service, USDA. In 1974 Johnsrud was named Director of the NDSU Cooperative Extension Service. In 1986 he was selected by the Secretary of Agriculture to provide national leadership for the extension systems as Administrator of the Extension Service, United States Department of Agriculture. In 1990 Johnsrud was commissioned by United States Secretary of Agriculture Clayton Yuetter to establish the first major adult education program in Poland on managing agribusiness firms and farms in a market-driven economy. Polish President Lech Walensa heralded it as one of the most successful programs Poland had in concert with any country. This program model is still being used in several of the former USSR republics in joint ventures with the United States. Johnsrud served as the Administrator of the Extension Service until 1993 when he was selected to head extension and outreach activities for the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. This higher education association represents more than 200 universities, including NDSU, at the national level. He has been the recipient of many special awards and recognition’s for this leadership, including the NDSU Alumni Achievement Award in 1991, Meritorious Executive Award from President Bush in 1992, International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame recipient in 1996, and National Distinguished Service Ruby Award. Also honored during Harvest Bowl will be the outstanding agriculturists from all North Dakota counties and several from northwestern Minnesota counties. The winner of the Harvest Bowl scholarship is Katie Lorenze, Langdon, N.D., a member of the women’s basketball team. Chuck Klabo, Finley, N.D., a Bison football player is the recipient of the Robert Johansen Harvest Bowl Scholarship while the Bob and Darlene Yaggie Football Scholarship goes to Blair Hynek a sophomore defensive tackle from Stanley, N.D. Winning the Bob Lauf Memorial Scholarship is Leah Klabo. Leah is a sophomore center on the NDSU women’s basketball team and hails from Finley, N.D. Honorees and scholarship winners will be recognized at the annual Harvest Bowl social and dinner starting at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at the Fargo Holiday Inn. Honorees will also take part in campus tours on Saturday and will be presented at the Harvest Bowl football game between the NDSU Bison and the University of North Colorado Saturday afternoon at the Fargodome.
