Lake Region Roundup is Jan. 7-8 at Devils Lake

The annual Lake Region Extension Roundup, which includes two days of presentations on a wide range of agricultural production and farm and family financial management topics, is set for Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 7 and 8, at the Memorial Building in Devil’s Lake. The roundup is organized by the North Dakota State University Extension Service with input from agribusinesses and other agricultural agencies.

Both days open with a sponsored breakfast from 8 to 9:15 a.m. with the program starting at 9:30 a.m.

Highlights of the opening session Tuesday include a review of heat units and corn maturity in northern North Dakota, a discussion of opportunities in foreign wheat markets, an update on small grain disease and fungicide response during 2002, a review of small grain variety choices, and an update on 2003 market supply and demand numbers for wheat.

Following a sponsored lunch, afternoon topics will include an update on barley markets, a review of key features of the 2002 Farm Program, a review of studies on malting barley production at the NDSU Langdon Research Extension Center, discussion on issues involved with biotech crops in North Dakota and an update on irrigation possibilities in the Devils Lake Basin.

Concurrent sessions to be held in the Armory Room on Tuesday will include discussion of farm loan rate impacts in crop production considerations in determining base acres, a discussion of corn and soybean markets for the coming year, a review of issues facing wheat producers and an update on the Conservation Title of the 2002 Farm Bill.

Additional concurrent sessions will be held in the Historical Room of the Courthouse and will focus on developments in high value crop production, the art of grandparenting, corn production and crop insurance.

Concurrent sessions in the Courthouse Meeting Room will include a flax production update, an outlook for insect pests in 2003, discussion of strategies for marketing wheat overseas and a horse management seminar.

Leading off the general session Wednesday morning will be a review of weed control in corn, what to expect from the West Nile virus in the coming year, an update on transfats and their implications for sunflower producers, the outlook for oilseed markets and a presentation on the dynamics of the confection sunflower market.

Following a sponsored lunch, afternoon topics will include a review of soybean research at the NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center, an update on weed control in dry beans and peas, a review of pest problems that threaten spruce plantings in the Lake Region, a presentation on weed control and compliance options on CRP acres and a discussion of intensive wheat management to optimize yield and quality.

Wednesday concurrent sessions in the Armory Room will include tips on managing wet stored corn and soybeans, details on local implementation of the Farm Program, a review of sunflower issues and an update on Devils Lake water management issues.

In the Courthouse Meeting Room, sessions will include an update on pea production, a review of adjuvant use in spraying and discussions on farm stress and family life.

In the Historical Room Wednesday, concurrent sessions will focus on new hog production facilities in Towner and Rolette counties and CRP hay quality.

In addition to educational sessions, there will be informational exhibits in the Memorial Building and Courthouse.
