Annual Cow-Calf Day Scheduled at the Carrington Research Center Feb. 12The annual cow-calf day at the North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 12. The free workshop begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 4 p.m. The program will open with an update on the quality of CRP hay quality by Karl Hoppe, NDSU Extension livestock specialist. Next, John Dhuyvetter, NDSU Extension specialist from NDSU’s North Central Research Extension Center, will discuss the genetic value of buying versus raising replacement heifers. The morning portion will wind up with Dr. Gerry Stokka of Pfizer, Inc., providing information on health programs for replacement beef heifers. Chad Ellingson of Genex will kick-off the afternoon, discussing the alternatives of using artificial insemination or natural service. Russ Danielson, NDSU Animal and Range Sciences Department will address how to use records for making keep or cull decisions and Greg Lardy, NDSU Animal and Range Science Department, will discuss feeding replacement heifers. Steve Metzger who is responsible for the Farm Business Management Program at the Carrington Research Extension Center will address the economics of buying versus raising replacement heifers. A noon meal will be available at a cost of $6. The Carrington Research Extension Center is located 3.5 miles north of Carrington on Highway 281.
