Marty Marchello Receives Hogoboom Endowed Professorship AwardMarty Marchello, meat scientist, North Dakota State University animal and range sciences department, is this year’s recipient of the Dale Hogoboom Endowed Professorship award. Marchello was nominated by Jim Tilton, emeritus professor, NDSU Animal and Ranges Sciences. "Marty is highly respected by students, producers and peers as a hard working, congenial scientist and teacher with a large amount of skill in meat science and technology," Tilton says. "His expertise has contributed immensely to the mission of NDSU." Marchello is internationally known for his efforts in bison research having studied the nutrient composition of both grass and grain-fed animals and completed the original USDA bison nutrient composition database. He has also provided leadership in the development of a nutrient composition database for 20 different wild game species. In addition to his extensive series of published data on large animals, Marchello has collaborated on diverse topics such as diabetes research and was instrumental in the development of bioelectrical impedance technology studies to assess body composition in livestock and humans. As principal investigator, Marchello has been the recipient of more than one million dollars in grants. Marchello’s teaching efforts include 11 different courses offered at NDSU. He has developed several new courses in meat science technology and has been an integral part of the Summer Institute for Food Safety. "His expertise in meat processing and nutrient composition are highly valued by the Animal and Range Sciences department and by other departments," Tilton says. He has received several teaching awards from the American Meat Science Institute and was the recipient of the NDSU College of Agriculture Senior Career Research Award in 1996. Marchello earned his bachelor’s degree from Montana State University, and his master’s and doctorate in animal science at Virginia Polytechnic and State University. NDSU graduate Dale Hogoboom Jr., Middleburg, Va., supports the Hogoboom professorship. The award includes a stipend of $5,000 for each of the next two years and $2,500, also for two years, for expenditures related to academic endeavors. ### Source: James Tilton, (701) 231-7664,
