North Dakota Lamb and Wool Sheep Tour Set for Nov. 5-6

The North Dakota Lamb and Wool Producers Association is sponsoring a tour of the components that make up the lamb meat industry on Nov. 5-6.

"The tour is designed to give insight to producers about the product they raise," says Roger Haugen, North Dakota State University Extension Service sheep specialist. "It will give producers an opportunity to tour and visit a working lamb feedlot and take a guided tour of the Iowa Lamb processing facility in Haywarden, Iowa. The tour will be an excellent opportunity for producers to network with industry people and fellow sheep producers from North Dakota."

The tour will leave from Fargo, at about 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 5 and return by about 5 p.m. on Nov. 6. Participants must register for the tour by Sunday, Oct. 12 by calling Wes Limesand with the NDSU sheep program at (701) 231-7782 or Burton Pfliger with the North Dakota Lamb and Wool Producers Association at 701-222-8770. Cost of the trip will be from $35 to $50 per person to cover transportation depending on the number of participants.

The first stop of the tour will be near Hurley, S.D., to visit the feedlot of Bill Aeschlimann. He will give a guided tour of his 20,000-head lamb facility. The tour’s next stop will be at the farm of Roger Regher of Marion, S.D. for a wool grading workshop. Regher raises registered Rambouillet sheep. The tour will spend the night at Bearsford, Iowa, at the Super 8 Motel. Room rates are $42 for a single and $45 for a double.

The second day of the tour will feature the Iowa Lamb processing facility in Haywarden. The guided tour will begin at 10:00 a.m. and is expected to take two hours.
