Backgrounding Shortcourse Scheduled for Dec. 3 in HettingerA backgrounding cattle management shortcouse is scheduled at the North Dakota State University Hettinger Research Extension Center Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 9:45 a.m. The program is free with a sponsored lunch. NDSU, South Dakota State University, Montana State University and the University of Wyoming have been working together to find ways to boost the livestock industry in the areas where the four states meet. "Backgrounding is one way for producers in this region to add-value to their crops and livestock," says Greg Lardy, beef specialist with the NDSU Extension Service. "This region has excellent resources for livestock production. This shortcourse will detail effective nutrition, management, and health programs for backgrounding operations." The program is sponsored by North Dakota State University and South Dakota State University and is part of the four-state Value Added Ruminant Consortium Project. The shortcourse will include a tour of the Hettinger Research Extension Center’s backgrounding yard. The shortcourse will include a discussion of health and nutrition programs for backgrounded cattle. Specialists will also review risk and business management strategies. Faculty include specialists from NDSU, SDSU and MSU.
