Lardy Selected 2003 Communicator of the Year

Greg Lardy is the 2003 Communicator of the Year, as selected by the North Dakota State University Agriculture Communication department and members of the North Dakota Association for Communication Excellence (ACE). Lardy is an associate professor and extension specialist in Animal and Range Sciences.

Lardy has become a familiar and respected presence among beef producers across the state. He has authored a number of publications to keep beef producers and others current on the latest research and issues. Some of his extension publications have focused on bovine spongiform encephalopathy, livestock management during drought and the use of byproducts and alternative feeds.

Lardy helped launch the highly successful Beef Quality Assurance program. He was part of the teaching team that developed NDSU’s food safety academic program. Most recently, he participated in video-conference meetings across the state to help producers plan marketing programs and take advantage of high cattle prices. Lardy is currently working as part of the team developing the NDSU Beef Systems Center for Excellence and has taken the lead in fundraising efforts for the Center. In addition, he has been active in encouraging cattle producers to take advantage of byproduct feed opportunities that abound in the region.

Lardy also holds a partial research appointment and takes pride in providing up-to-date factual research results to cattle producers throughout the region. He also stresses written and oral communication skills to graduate students as part of their training.

He grew up on a ranch northeast of Sentinel Butte and attributes his success, in part, to the values, work ethic and knowledge of the cattle industry garnered during his childhood. He earned his bachelors degree from NDSU, master’s at the University of Missouri in Columbia and his doctorate from the University of Nebraska. He began his career at NDSU in 1997.

The Communicator of the Year Award recognizes an individual who has displayed exceptional expertise and professionalism in delivering educational programs and information to the public. Selection criteria include media/materials preparation and delivery, preferably using several types of media.

A luncheon in Lardy’s honor will be at 11:45 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 17, in the Prairie Rose Room of the NDSU Memorial Union. In addition, Wade Moser, North Dakota Stockmen’s Association executive vice president, will discuss the positive influences on today’s beef industry. Tickets for the luncheon are $7.50 and available in Morrill Hall 7 or by calling 231-7881.
