Lake Region Roundup is Jan. 7-8 at Devils Lake

The annual Lake Region Extension Roundup includes two days of presentations on a wide range of agricultural production and farm and family financial management topics. The event is set for Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 7 and 8, at the Memorial Building in Devil's Lake. The roundup is organized by the North Dakota State University Extension Service with input from agribusinesses and other agricultural agencies.

Both days open with a sponsored breakfast from 8 to 9:15 a.m. with the program starting at 9:30 a.m.

Highlights of the opening session Tuesday include a review of research on weed control in flax, an update on how the NDawn weather system assists crop production, an update on herbicides and weed control in small grains, a discussion of small grain variety performance results and an outlook on wheat market dynamics for 2004.

Following a sponsored lunch, afternoon topics will include a review of research on postemergence nitrogen applications and their impact on wheat yield, discussion on the effect of planting date and population on corn yield, an update on new developments in insect management in oilseed crops, an overview of ideas for managing nightshade in row crops, a discussion of best management practices for identity preserved grains, and an update on opportunities and risks for white wheat production in North Dakota.

Concurrent sessions to be held in the Armory Room on Wednesday will include tips for keeping

your computer healthy, an explanation of NDawn, a weather system for agriculture, tips for marketing your business on the Web, an overview of the N.D. Bizpathways program, discussions on wheat-related issues, and an overview of factors that will influence the 2004 corn and soybean markets.

Additional concurrent sessions will be held in the Historical Room of the Courthouse and will focus on results of a trial program to resolve conservation concerns, impacts of BSE on cattle producers, country of origin labeling issues and biosecurity concerns in animal agriculture.

Concurrent sessions in the Courthouse Meeting Room will include a discussion of fertilizer placement and pricing, carbon storage and what's new in managing soil variability, an update on managing herbicide-resistant crop volunteers, a presentation titled "My Heroes Have Always Been Farmers," discussion about the dynamics of communication and teamwork involving men and women and tips to improve employee management and relationships.

Leading off the general session Wednesday morning will be a discussion of methamphetamine production in rural areas, a review of the fertilizer studies in canola and an update on sunflower market developments, a presentation by a motivational speaker and discussion of developments that will influence barley markets in 2004.

Following a sponsored lunch, afternoon topics will include a review of malting barley production research at Carrington and Langdon, an evaluation of fungicide application equipment, a review of ideas to manage market news and views, an update on disease control in canola, and a review of the 2003 wheat production season.

Thursday concurrent sessions in the Armory Room will include discussion on farm management labor issues, land values and rents, tips to reduce canola production costs, an update on sunflower production techniques, discussion on the dietary use of flaxseed and dietary and activity recommendations related to men's health.

In the Courthouse Meeting Room, sessions will include a barley production discussion, a review

of soybean management studies at Carrington and a presentation on valuing differences in yourself and others in the workplace.

In the Historical Room Thursday, concurrent sessions will provide an update on Lake Region water utilization, give insights on the best use of fungicides in small grain, provide an update on value-added agriculture efforts in the Lake Region and North Dakota and review field pea production, markets and disease management topics.

In addition to educational sessions, there will be informational exhibits in the Memorial Building and Courthouse.
