Cowboy Beef Day Set for Jan. 21 in Killdeer

Updates on BSE, grazing issues and byproduct feeding will be highlights of the Killdeer Cowboy Beef Day Wednesday, Jan. 21, beginning at 9:45 a.m. at the Buckskin restaurant in Killdeer.

The event will provide an overview of livestock issues and management topics, according to David Twist, North Dakota State University Extension Service agent in Dunn County. The free event features speakers from the NDSU Extension Service and is scheduled to adjourn at 4 p.m.

Morning sessions include an update by marketing economist Tim Petry on country of origin labeling, the Canadian border opening and a national animal identification plan. Petry will also provide a market outlook. Beef specialist Greg Lardy will discuss the use of fat as a supplement for beef cows. Gene Harris, regional vice president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, will report on NCBA activities.

Afternoon sessions will include a discussion by Lardy on the appropriate use of ethanol byproducts in feeding programs. Rangeland specialist Kevin Sedivec will provide an update on range issues including progress on the U.S. Forest Service grazing plan. Veterinarian Charles Stoltenow will give an update on biosecurity and health issues. He will also provide an update on the U.S. BSE case.
