Sugarbeet Growers Seminar Set for Wahpeton

A seminar designed for sugarbeet growers is set for Thursday, Jan. 29 at the Wahpeton Eagles Club.

Joe Giles, North Dakota State University soil scientist will start the seminar at 9 a.m. with information on managing seedbed preparation, crop residues, adjusting planters and selecting seeding rates. Dave Franzen, NDSU precision farming specialist will conduct a seminar on improving drainage and salinity at 9:45 a.m.

Neil Gudmestad, NDSU potato and sugarbeet disease specialist will lead a discussion on fungicide resistance management while Mohamed Khan, NDSU sugarbeet specialist and Carl Bradley, NDSU plant pathologist, will be on a panel to discuss managing sugarbeet diseases.

A seminar on sugarbeet weed management will be lead by Alan Dexter, NDSU weed control specialist. Mark Boetel, NDSU sugarbeet entomologist will provide insect management tips for the 2004 growing season.

Other topics include banding 10-34-0, nitrogen fertilizer, residue interaction on sugarbeet production, impact of damage and root diseases on storage and strategies to improve economic sugarbeet production.

There will be a Dutch-treat luncheon available for attendees. Free coffee and refreshments will be provided throughout the day. Admission is free. Continuing Education Units will be offered to Certified Crop Advisors. Contact Mohamed Khan at (701) 231-8596 for additional information.

The seminar is sponsored by the NDSU and University of Minnesota extension services, the states’ agricultural experiment stations, USDA and the Sugarbeet Research and Education Board of Minnesota and North Dakota.
