January 15, 2004 Annual Cow-Calf Day Set for Feb. 11 at NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center The Annual Cow-Calf Day at the North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb 11. The free workshop begins at 9:30 a.m. and continues until 4:00 p.m. The center is located 3.5 miles north of Carrington on Highway 281. The program will open with a discussion on tools for synchronizing estrus by Kim Vonnahme, a post doctoral research associate at NDSU. Next, Karl Hoppe, NDSU Extension Service area livestock specialist will address the use of electronic technology for livestock identification. Vern Anderson, livestock researcher at the Carrington Research Extension Center, will discuss results of recent research on fly ash use and creep feeding using barley malt pellets. After lunch, which will be available for $6 per plate, Greg Lardy, NDSU Extension Service beef cattle specialist will update participants on BSE. Tim Petry, NDSU Extension Service livestock economist, will talk about current issues in the beef industry, specifically country of origin labeling (COOL), mandatory livestock identification and beef trade across the Canadian border. Petry will also discuss current and future market trends. Beef production trends and projections on beef profitability will be discussed by Steve Metzger, coordinator of the Carrington Farm Business Management Program.
