February 19, 2004 Livestock Development Conference Scheduled For March 3 and 4 A two-day conference, Livestock Development and Our Environment, will be held Wednesday, March 3, and Thursday, March 4, at the Best Western Doublewood Inn and Conference Center in Fargo. The objective of the conference is to educate the public about the opportunities for animal agriculture and about environmental issues concerning feeding operations in North Dakota. Other topics include:
National and state legal and livestock development experts will speak at the conference. Agriculture Commissioner Roger Johnson will discuss the future of livestock development and its importance. Also speaking on the future of livestock is Ken Odde, chair of the North Dakota State University Department Animal and Range Sciences. Bridget Johnson, NDSU Extension Service, Scott Ressler, Stockmen’s Association and Jason Wirtz, Department of Agriculture will review environmental programs in North Dakota. A discussion on research in the area of odor and air quality measurements, evaluation and control for agriculture will be led by Jeff Lorimor, Iowa State University agricultural engineer. A featured speaker is Andrew McCrea, a Missouri farmer and rancher, author and four-time recipient of the Oscar in agriculture radio broadcasting. McCrea will speak on the leadership skills needed in agriculture today. Following the last session on Thursday, the North Dakota Department of Health will hold a public hearing at the Doublewood Inn to address the proposed revisions to the state’s program for controlling pollution for animal feeding operations. Registration for the conference is $70 prior to Feb. 25 or $80 after that date. The NDSU Extension Service along with the Governor’s office, Department of Agriculture, Department of Health, Association of Counties, Dakota Resource Council and the Cavalier County Job Development Council are organizing partners of the conference.
