National County Government Week set for April 18-24

National County Government Week (NCGW) is April 18-24, 2004, and many county offices of the North Dakota State University Extension Service will be informing people about the important partnership between counties and the Extension Service.

Duane Hauck, NDSU Extension Service Interim Director, encourages county Extension Offices to educate the public about the impact of county government.

"Because of our partnership with county governments, all people have direct access to NDSU through their local extension office,” Hauck says. “County extension work serves as the foundation of the NDSU Extension Service and assures that our programs are grass-roots driven".

Hauck says the Extension Service appreciates partnerships at the county, state and national level. Extension funding from all three levels of government makes it possible for the NDSU Extension Service to carry out its mission of creating learning partnerships that help adults and youth improve their lives and communities.

The theme for this year’s NCGW is “Transportation: Counties Move America’s People and Products.” According to the National Association of Counties President, Karen Miller, counties build and maintain 45 percent of the nation’s highways and 44 percent of all bridges nationwide.

More than 1000 counties annually participate in the county government week by touring county facilities, presenting educational material for adult and youth, meetings with business and community leaders, recognition programs for volunteers, and offering sessions on farm safety issues, financial management, home horticulture, and affordable housing.
