Carrington Research Extension Center Field Day Scheduled for July 13

The Carrington Research Extension Center annual field day will be held on Tuesday, July 13 beginning at 8:45 a.m. with refreshments. Ken Grafton, North Dakota State University Research Extension Center director, and Duane Hauck, NDSU Extension Service interim director, will address participants at 9:10 a.m. They will review Experiment Station and Extension highlights. Morning tours will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Morning tour options:

1) A livestock production review. Results from recent research and extension trials including pulses in receiving diets, cow/calf records for breed of sire, barley protein supplementation, processing effects of flax in feeding diets, livestock economics, synchronizing heifers, fly ash use in non-permitted operations, Dakota Feeder Calf Show program, new barley markets and nitrogen capture with composted bedding.

2) A crop variety and production review. The tour will include discussions on alternative crop options and a cropping systems update. Plant breeders will discuss new varieties and variety comparisons for barley, hard red spring wheat, durum and soybean.

The afternoon tours will begin at 1:15 p.m. following lunch sponsored by the Carrington Research Extension Center.

Afternoon tour options include:

1) Pest management. Specialists will discuss specific research and provide an overview of growing season concerns and management options for controlling weeds, plant diseases and insects.

2) Production management. Discussion topics include technology’s role in agriculture and farm business management. The technology areas to be reviewed are GPS and yield monitoring in production agriculture, the North Dakota Agricultural Weather Network and the application of these technologies.

A special afternoon environment and livestock demonstration session will begin at 1:15 at the Livestock Unit. The demonstration will feature nutrient management planning, manure composting and animal disposal through composting. Hands on demonstrations will be provided to see the effects of proper composting.

A demonstration of septic tank management and drain fields will be conducted by Vern Hoffman, NDSU Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department.

The tours should end at approximately 3:45 p.m.
