NDSU Agricultural Experiment Station Releases Beach Oat

The North Dakota State University Agricultural Experiment Station announces the release of “Beach” oat. Beach is an extremely high yielding oat variety that is at the top or very near the top in oat variety trials, says Al Schneiter, chair of the Department of Plant Sciences at NDSU. In two years of trials, Beach had higher test weights than all other hulless varieties.

Beach has a white hull color with relatively large kernels. The maturity is similar to Killdeer. Beach has characteristics that would make it a desirable variety for the racehorse oat market, Schneiter says.

Beach will be allocated through the County Crop Improvement Association in 2005. The NDSU Research Foundation will apply for PVP with Title V and collect research fees.
