July 1, 2004 Crop Highlights of the Carrington Research Extension Center Field Day The North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center annual field day will be held on Tuesday, July 13. Several crop sessions will be included on the day’s agenda such as crop variety and production review, crop pest management and practical use of precision agriculture tools. The crop variety and production review will begin at 9:30 a.m. NDSU plant breeders will discuss new varieties and variety comparisons for barley, hard red spring wheat, durum and soybean. Also, Carrington Center agronomists will review several alternative crops and the impact of crop rotation, tillage, and nitrogen on cropping systems. Following a noon lunch, tour participants will be able to attend one of two afternoon crop sessions that begin at 1:15 p.m. During the first concurrent session, Extension crop specialists and Carrington Center agronomists will discuss NDSU’s current research and recommendations for managing this season’s important weeds, diseases and insects. The objective of the second crop session is to provide ideas on applying information gained from yield monitors and intensive soil sampling to increase crop yields while maintaining or reducing inputs. John Nowatzki, Extension precision ag specialist, will review GPS applications and mapping options. Dave Franzen, Extension soil specialist, will discuss soil fertility management using precision ag information. Farmers Terry Bryn, Dazey and Jeremy Wilson, Jamestown, Carrington Center advisory board members and Greg Endres, Extension area agronomist, will discuss on-farm use of yield monitors, variable rate application of farm inputs and use of data maps for precision farming. Steve Metzger, farm business management coordinator at Carrington, will review wheat and corn profitability based on crop yield and input costs. More details regarding the field day may be obtained by contacting the Carrington Center (701-652-2951) or checking their website (www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/carringt/). ### Source: Greg
