Annual Field Day at the North Central Research Extension Center Set for July 14

The annual field day at the North Central Research Extension Center in Minot will be held on Wednesday, July 14. The Center is located one mile south of Minot on Highway 83. The day will begin with refreshments at 9 a.m.

Center Director Jay Fisher will welcome participants and introduce Ken Grafton, NDSU Agricultural Experiment Station director, and Duane Hauck, NDSU Extension Service interim director. They will review Experiment Station and Extension Service highlights.

The morning field crop tour will begin at 9:45 with a demonstration on septic tank management and drain field technologies conducted by Vern Hoffman, Extension specialist, NDSU Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department.

Morning Field Tour 10 a.m.– 12 p.m.

A crop variety and cropping systems field tour will include presentations by NDSU plant breeders and crop production specialists. They will discuss variety comparisons for barley, hard red spring wheat, winter wheat, specialty wheat, durum and oat. Geneticists will give updates on new variety releases.

A noon lunch will be served.

Afternoon Field Tour 1 p.m.–3:30 p.m.

The afternoon program will begin at 1:00 p.m. A crop variety and production tour will include presentations on corn, soybean and winter wheat cropping systems and production updates. Weed scientists will discuss weed control issues in cereal and broadleaf crops. Pest protection specialists will provide updates on entomology and plant pathological disease issues and control options.

Horticulture Tour 6:30 p.m.

An evening horticulture tour will conclude the day’s activities. A tour of trees and shrubs will begin at 6:30 p.m. Larry Chaput, NDSU horticulture research specialist, will facilitate the tour.

Every spring the NDSU Horticulture Department plants a number of trees and shrubs at the center for evaluation. Thirty of these trees and shrubs will be included on the tour. The tour is open to all area people interested in horticulture.
