July 22, 2004 NDSU Sheep Win Awards at Largest Purebred Sheep Sale Sheep from the North Dakota State University Animal and Range Sciences flock won awards as the best consignments at the recent Midwest Stud Ram Show and Sale held in Sedalia, Mo. NDSU consigned Columbia, Hampshire and Katahdin sheep to this event. Consigners traveled from coast to coast to attend, and over 2500 sheep were shown and sold. Best consignment awards are based on the winning of individual animals by each exhibitor within each breed. The first of these awards went to NDSU’s exhibits in the Katahdin breed. Three class winners were exhibited as well as the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion ewes and the Grand Champion ram. The champion ram sold to Ohio and the champion ewes sold to Louisiana and Missouri, respectively. Both of the ram and ewe champions were also the top sellers of their breed. The Katahdin flock was established at NDSU in 2001 by selections made in Kansas and Missouri by Wes Limesand, NDSU shepherd. The purchase of these flock foundations was made possible by a donation through the NDSU Development Foundation by Richard and Audrey Kloubec of Fargo. The Kloubec family has had a long-time interest in sheep production and recognized the potential for this breed to the entire sheep industry. Katahdins are a hair breed that does not require shearing and has found great favor nationwide as a breed requiring lower inputs and labor. The second of the best consignment awards went to NDSU’s Columbia entries. Contributing to this award were the Reserve Grand Champion ewe and the first prize spring ewe lamb. Another of NDSU’s Columbias, a spring ram lamb, was the top selling ram of the sale. NDSU’s Columbia flock has long been recognized as one of the elite flocks of the breed in the nation. Over the years numerous champions and high selling individuals have been produced, and breeding stock has been sold to all areas of the country. Unlike the Katahdin flock which was established only recently, the Columbia flock was founded at NDSU (then NDAC) in 1945 with a donation by Louis B. Hanna, former North Dakota governor and M. L. Buchanan, Animal Husbandry department chair. Faculty member J. H. Longwell made the initial selection of ten head for this flock from the 700 head flock of Hanna Stock Farm, Bordulac, North Dakota. ### Source:
