July 22, 2004 Rice Wins Pinnacle Award for Outstanding Humanitarian Service The National Association of County Agricultural Agents has awarded Dave Rice its Pinnacle Award for Outstanding Humanitarian Service. Rice is a Webmaster and information technology trainer for the North Dakota State University Agriculture Communication Department. The NACAA’s highest award is given annually to an active member who distinguishes him or herself as an outstanding humanitarian in the area in which they live and serve and who deliver effective agricultural Extension educational programs. A major portion of Rice’s volunteer service is dedicated to military veterans. He has been a regional director for the U.S. Navy Cruiser Sailors Association since 2000 and is Webmaster and editor of a newsletter for the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 273. He ha been president of the Fargo area U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer’s Mess since 1994 and is currently a vice commander of the Fargo American Legion. He has coordinated an Annual Navy Ball for the last 13 years. Thousands of veterans have been reunited at these events through his efforts. He is a regular volunteer at the Fargo American Legion Post, conducting fundraisers to support American Legion baseball, Boys and Girls State and other charitable programs. A Web site, www.tristateveterans.com, was developed by Rice to give veterans organizations more visibility by publishing a calendar of events and he develops Web sites for veterans organizations. He also coordinates rides for veterans to attend funerals and has performed military honors at several funerals. Rice served on the Board of Directors of the Cass/Clay Chapter of the American Red Cross from 1987 to 1993 and was Chair of the Board from 1990 to 1992. He served on the Red Cross Disaster Action Team and Service to Military Families Committee from 1988 to 1993. Rice responded to home fires and arranged for housing, clothing, medicine and food for fire victims. He also provided emergency communication between family members and military service members when there was a death in the family. Rice was awarded the Department of Defense Humanitarian Service Medal in 1997 for his efforts during the Red River Valley flood and received a USDA Group Honor Award for Excellence as part of NDSUs flood response team. Rice was given the award at the NACAA’s recent convention in Orlando, Florida. In accepting the award, Rice credited his parents and neighbors who were always there to help those in need. “Neighbors helping neighbors was just a way of life and I wanted to continue that philosophy in my adult life,” Rice says. The National Association of County Agricultural Agents is a professional organization with over 6600 members across the United States.
