August 5, 2004 Conference on Agricultural Competitiveness and Change Under Globalization A conference for those interested in agriculture such as farmers, farm community leaders, agribusiness employees, local and federal government workers and academics is set for Oct. 11-12 at the Ramada Plaza Suites and Conference Center in Fargo. “The goal of the conference is to analyze changes in U.S. agriculture and agribusiness under globalization, says Won Koo, North Dakota State University Center for Agricultural Policy and Trade Studies director. “We will also evaluate the impact of structural changes and trade liberalization on U.S. farm income.” The Center, along with the University of Minnesota’s Freeman Center for International Economic Policy, is organizing the event. Major issues that will be addressed at the conference include: market structure and international competition, the environment, biotechnology, bioterrorism, changes in U.S. farms and agribusiness and how agriculture in the United States can stay competitive. Some of the featured speakers include: Mike Doane, Monsanto director of global industry; James Horvath, American Crystal Sugar Company president; Robbin Johnson, Cargill senior vice president; Jim Miller, Farmers Union chief economist; and Robert Young, American Farm Bureau chief economist. North Dakota Senators Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad have also been invited to speak. The fee for the conference is $135 for those registering before Sept. 3 and $180 thereafter. The fee includes materials, receptions, one dinner, two continental breakfasts, two lunches and refreshments during breaks. There is a discounted fee of $80 for agricultural producers, which also includes materials and meals. The student fee is $20, which does not include meals.
