September 1, 2004 WOW Focuses on Healthy Living, Relaxation, Fun The fifth annual Women’s Overall Wellness retreat (W.O.W.) will be at the Assumption Abbey in Richardton, N.D., Sept. 17-19. Retreat organizers say it’s a great way for women to take a break and gather their inner resources after a busy summer. The weekend will feature inspirational speakers, enthusiasm for healthy living, relaxation, fun, comradeship and Abbey food. About 50 women are expected to attend. Jean Beyer, provost emeritus of Nebraska Methodist College of Nursing and Allied Health and an adjunct professor at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, will return as keynote speaker. She is a highly acclaimed speaker whose humorous and motivational style makes learning about women mentoring women an unforgettable and inspirational experience. Beyer will present two programs during the weekend. Her sessions are “Women of Wisdom” and “Quilting the Fabric of Our Lives, Faith, Family and Friends.” She will use 20 quilts to trace the fabric of women’s lives. Jane Edwards, a registered dietitian and a nutrition specialist for the North Dakota State University Extension Service, will lead off the program with a session titled “Fitness and Fun.” She also will present a session titled “Diet Dilemma.” Other speakers are Francie Berg, a licensed nutritionist and family wellness specialist from Hettinger, who will provide a session on “Celebrating Health at Every Size,” and Duane and Karen Ehrens, whose session is on “Cooking with Flare.” Karen Ehrens is a licensed registered dietitian. Duane Ehrens is a chef for Cafe Etc. at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. The registration deadline for the retreat is Friday, Sept. 3, with $60 of the $110 fee due then. The other $50 is due upon arrival. Checks should be payable to Dakota Corners Health Coalition and sent to: Women’s Retreat, Adams County Extension Office, PO Box 1100, Hettinger, ND 58639. The retreat’s sponsors include the NDSU Extension Service and West River Health Services in Hettinger. The first retreat was in 2000. Titled “Healthy at Every Size,” it was designed to encourage acceptance of woman of all sizes and promote healthy eating habits and activities for women. The retreat changed its name to “Women’s Overall Wellness” in 2002 to reflect its broader focus on teaching women to bring a healthy balance of mind, body and spirit into their lives. ### Source:
