University of Minnesota to Host Bedding Plant Conferences

University of Minnesota professors and researchers will host four conferences to educate growers on bedding plant production and greenhouse management. The conference begins with registration at 8 a.m. and concludes at 3:15 p.m.

The dates and locations are:

  • Sept. 28, Holiday Inn, Detroit Lakes, Minn.
  • Sept. 29, Lakeview Castle, Duluth, Minn.
  • Sept. 30, Rochester Community and Technical College, Rochester, Minn.
  • Oct. 6, Midland Hills, Roseville, Minn.

The conference begins at 8:30 a.m. with a discussion on “Hot Weather Annuals” by John Erwin, associate horticultural science professor. Next, Charlie Rohwer, graduate research assistant, will present important issues in water gardening. At 9:30 a.m., Neil Anderson, assistant horticultural sciences professor, has a presentation on “Nitrogen Sources and Its Effect on Food Crops.”

From 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., Janna Beckerman, extension plant pathologist will explain “Fairly New Fungicides” that have even greater promise for plant health management. At 10:45 a.m., learn about the new plants available this year as Neil Anderson discusses “New and Award Wining Flowering Crops.” The challenges of controlling thrips will be explained by Mike McDonough, Department of Entomology research fellow.

At 1 p.m. John Erwin and Neil Anderson will discuss what new research projects are underway at the University of Minnesota. Hear how to identify and control greenhouse pests as Mike McDounough talks about “Fungus Gnat and Shore Fly Control and New Research.”

At 2 p.m., Janna Beckerman explain how to use natural fungicides for disease management and how to obtain the best results from them. The conference will conclude at 2:45 p.m. with a presentation by Charlie Rohwer on “Cold Temperature Plants for Northern Growers and Gardens.”

The cost of the conference is $35 if you register before Sept. 24. On-site registration is $50. Coffee, snacks and lunch are included in the registration fee.
