Caton Receives Ruminant Nutrition Award

The American Society of Animal Science has awarded Joel Caton, North Dakota State University professor in the Animal and Range Sciences Department, its 2004 Ruminant Nutrition Research Award.

The award is sponsored by the American Feed Industry Association. It was given to Caton for his lasting contributions to the livestock industry. He received the award during the American Society of Animal Science Annual Meeting in Saint Louis.

Over the past 10 years, Caton’s ruminant nutrition research program has focused on applied and mechanistic aspects of forage utilization, supplementation and digestive physiology, interactions between nutrition and pregnancy and selenium metabolism.

Caton and his colleagues have published 283 refereed articles, proceedings, abstracts and reports. In addition, Caton and collaborators have received over $3.3 million in grant funds. As a component of his research program, he has advised 26 graduate students and four postdoctoral fellows.

Caton received his master’s degree from the University of Missouri and his doctorate at New Mexico State University. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Missouri, he accepted a ruminant nutrition position in the Animal and Range Sciences Department at NDSU.

Caton was also recently the recipient of NDSU’s Agriculture Research Award.
