NDSU Celebrates 31 years of Excellence in Agriculture and Bison Athletics

North Dakota State University is dedicated to recognizing agriculture, education and great people in the region by hosting a banquet and dedicating a football game each fall to the theme of Harvest Bowl. NDSU and North Dakota agriculture have been close partners for over a century.

As the state’s land-grant university, NDSU has played a major role in contributing knowledge through research, academic programs and Extension. More than 1,800 agriculturists have been recognized and more than $66,000 in scholarship dollars have been awarded to NDSU student athletes with agricultural backgrounds.

The NDSU Harvest Bowl program annually recognizes the success, dedication and hard work of outstanding agriculturists in 53 counties in North Dakota and five counties in Minnesota. For a complete list of honorees, visit http://www.ndsualumni.com/coe/harvest/harvestbowl.htm and click on Events/Reunions.

Four scholarships are awarded to outstanding male and female athletes. The 2004 Harvest Bowl scholarship recipient is Justin Monson. Monson is an offensive tackle on the Bison football team and is from Gardner. The winner of the Robert Johansen scholarship is Leah Klabo. Klabo, Finley, is a member of the women’s basketball team. The Bob and Darlene Yaggie Football Scholarship goes to Derek Arndt, a tight end from LaMoure. Receiving the Bob Lauf Memorial Scholarship is Katie Lorenz from Langdon. Lorenz is a member of the women’s basketball team.

An agri-business award recipient is also chosen annually. This award recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves in the field of agriculture and business in the state of North Dakota and beyond. Howard Olson, Carrington, N.D., will receive the 2004 Agri-business Award.

During his career, Olson furthered agricultural research in his positions with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the USDA Research Station at Mandan and the NDSU Research Extension Centers in Williston and Carrington.

The 31st annual Harvest Bowl festivities begin Friday, Oct. 29, at the Fargo Ramada Plaza Suites and Convention Center with a dinner, ceremony, games and a dance. On Saturday, honorees will participate in educational sessions on the NDSU campus and attend the Harvest Bowl football game, which pits NDSU against the Northwestern State University of Louisiana.
