Backgrounding Shortcourse Scheduled for Oct. 12 in Hettinger

The North Dakota State University Hettinger Research Extension Center will host a Backgrounding Cattle Management Shortcourse on Oct. 12, featuring several presentations by regional specialists.

Coffee and donuts will be served at 9:45 a.m. Following a welcome by Leif Anderson, animal scientist at the HREC, participants will leave for the backgrounding lot to view cattle, hear project reviews and watch an ultrasound demonstration.

At 11:30 a.m., Bridget Johnson, area livestock nutrient management specialist, will review Department of Health regulations. Then, participants will be served a free lunch sponsored by Fort Dodge Animal Health.

The afternoon program consists of presentations by Greg Lardy, NDSU Extension beef cattle specialist and Trey Patterson, South Dakota State University Extension beef cattle specialist. Topics include livestock water and mineral issues, early weaning management and research, nutrition and feed management and drought-stressed feeds and feed buys.

An education resource review and questions are the last items on the agenda. The shortcourse is scheduled to conclude at 3 p.m.

Participants are also welcome to attend the Adams County Feedlot Tour, held the following day, Oct. 13. The tour will begin at 9 a.m. with stops at three feedlot facilities in Adams County.

The tour is sponsored by Adams County Watershed Projects. Individuals will have the opportunity to see improvements and expansions made possible by grant dollars, and to ask feedlot operators questions about specifications.

Pre-registration is not necessary for the shortcourse or the tour. Both events are free of charge. For additional information, contact Leif Anderson at (701) 567-4323 or leif.anderson@ndsu.nodak.edu.
