October 7, 2004 NDSU Vic Sturlaugson Learning Center Receives Elite Award The recently constructed North Dakota State University Langdon Research Extension Center Vic Sturlaugson Learning Facility has been recognized by the North Dakota Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The new facility received the 2004 top merit award for its unique design at the North Dakota American Institute of Architects annual convention and awards program. JLG Architects of Grand Forks worked with the owners of the facility to perfect the design based on the planned functionality of the Learning Center. The award was presented in recognition of the talent and capabilities of the architects and their achievement in the design of structures that fulfill the necessary qualifications of beauty, function, and strength and lend themselves to the beautification of the entire community. “Designing the Center was a wonderful, challenging and exciting experience,” says Jim Galloway, chief architect. “The NDSU administration and LREC staff were very willing to look at non-traditional ideas, innovative concepts, and creative uses of materials and spaces. The result is a tremendous addition to their existing campus and to the whole region surrounding Langdon.” NDSU President Joseph Chapman and Randy Mehlhoff, LREC director, accepted the award. President Chapman also received a merit award for his contributions in support of the architectural industry in North Dakota. “The outcome of the Vic Sturlaugson Learning Center has far exceeded the Center’s faculty and staff expectations concerning the functionality of the building,” Mehlhoff says. Mehlhoff credits the overall community and regional support for the success of the Learning Center. “This is a perfect example of what can happen when government, business, lenders, utilities, producers and the general public work as a unified team with a vision for a better future in North Dakota.” ### Source:
