NDSU Dairy Judging Team Places at Expo

The North Dakota State University Dairy Judging Team placed sixth among 25 teams in the recent dairy judging contest at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis.

Team member Kim Lohse was the fourth high individual. Another team member, Karen Nordling, was the 22nd high individual.

NDSU was first in Holsteins, with Nordling ranking first and Patti Rusch fourth. NDSU placed second in Guernseys, with Kim Schaff finishing in 10th place. NDSU was third in Milking Shorthorns, with Schaff receiving fourth place. The team also placed sixth in the reasons competition, with Nordling receiving seventh place. Lohse was high individual in the Brown Swiss competition.

Rusch is a senior from Hutchinson, Minn., majoring in animal science. Schaff is a senior from Mandan, N.D., majoring in mass communication and speech communication. Lohse is a senior from Lakefield, Minn., majoring in animal and range science. Nordling is a junior from Randolph, Minn., majoring in mass communication.

“Judging teams are an important part of the undergraduate experience at NDSU, and we are proud of the performance of the Dairy Judging Team,” said Ken Odde, head of the Department of Animal and Range Sciences.

California Polytechnic State University team placed first overall in the competition, followed by the University of Minnesota, second; University of Wisconsin-Madison, third; University of Illinois, fourth; Michigan State University, fifth; and Cornell University, seventh.

Dan Schimek, research specialist with the Animal and Range Sciences Department, coached the NDSU team. Todd Molden, a dairy research technician in the department, was the team’s assistant coach.
