Excellence in Agriculture and Bison Athletics Featured at Harvest Bowl

Four scholarships will be awarded to outstanding North Dakota State University male and female athletes during this year’s Harvest Bowl festivities Oct. 29-30. The NDSU Harvest Bowl program also annually recognizes the outstanding work of agriculturists in 53 counties in North Dakota and five counties in Minnesota. A special agri-business award goes to an individual who has a distinguished record agriculture and business.

The 2004 Harvest Bowl Scholarship recipient is Justin Monson. The winner of the Robert Johansen Scholarship is Leah Klabo. The Bob and Darlene Yaggie Scholarship recipient is Derek Arndt and the Bob Lauf Memorial Scholarship winner is Katie Lorenz.

Monson, a junior from Gardner, N.D., is a 6-foot-5 offensive tackle for the Bison football team. He is a veteran player who gives depth to the Bison as a versatile player who possesses good athletic ability.

Monson prepped at Northern Cass High School, where he was first team all-region and all-conference and first team all-state (9-man). He also performed well on the basketball court, where he was selected for first team all-conference, all-district and team MVP while leading the team in rebounding. Monson is the son of Jeff and Carolyn Monson and is majoring in hospitality and tourism management with a minor in business.

Klabo is a 6-foot-4 senior center from Finley, N.D. She was an honorable mention to the All-North Central Conference team last year. She is sixth in blocked shots on NDSU’s all-time list and has scored 35 times in double figures and made 10 or more rebounds in a game six times. She has been NDSU’s leading rebounder in 15 games and the top Bison scorer in seven. In her career, Klabo has connected on 46.5 percent of her shots from the floor and 57 percent from the foul line, adding 113 blocked shots, 57 assists and 40 steals.

Klabo is a 2000 graduate of Mayville-Portland-Clifford-Galesburg High School. She set eight school records and earned the Class B all-state and North Dakota’s Gatorade Player of the Year honors as a senior. She is the daughter of Brad and Marsha Klabo. She is majoring in elementary education with a minor in child development and family science.

Lorenz is a 5-foot-8 junior guard from Langdon, N.D. A 2002 graduate of Langdon High School, Lorenz was the first freshman to start at that position for the Bison since All-American Jody Buck. Lorenz, a consistent backcourt standout for the Bison, was voted co-captain by teammates. She holds a school record for making 28 consecutive free throws. She was an All-North Central Conference first-team performer, selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VII third team, was honorable mention Academic All-NCC and was selected NCC Player of the Week.

During her high school career, Lorenz was selected as North Dakota’s “Miss Basketball,” Class B Player of the Year and North Dakota’s Gatorade Player of the Year in 2001-2002. Not only talented in basketball, Lorenz was an all-state, all-district and state all-tourney performer in volleyball, was a finalist for North Dakota’s “Miss Volleyball” and was a three-time all-state performer in golf. She is the daughter of Keith and Kathy Lorenz. She is majoring in business administration.

Arndt, a 6-foot-4 junior tight end, hails from LaMoure, N.D. Arndt is a strong, young talent successfully making the transition from defense to offense. He played as a true freshman for the Bison, having his redshirt taken off during the 2002 season.

Arndt attended LaMoure High School, where he was a two-time first team all-conference selection, second team all-state as a junior and first team all-state as a senior. Arndt was also named Region Player of the Year, Team MVP and captain for his senior year. He also competed in basketball, where he was a four-year all-conference player and all-state as a senior. He is the son of Lynn and Marianne Arndt and is majoring in criminal justice with a minor in psychology.

Howard Olson, Fargo, N.D., will receive the 2004 Agri-business Award. During his career, Olson furthered agricultural research in his positions with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the USDA Research Station at Mandan and the NDSU Research Extension Centers in Williston and Carrington.
The Harvest Bowl festivities begin on Friday, Oct. 29, at the Ramada Plaza Suites and Convention Center in Fargo with a dinner, ceremony, games and a dance. On Saturday, Oct. 30, honorees will participate in educational sessions and the dedication of the historical daylily garden, all on the NDSU campus. In the afternoon, honorees will attend the Harvest Bowl football game at the Fargodome, which pits NDSU against Northwestern State University of Louisiana.
