The team of Chelsea Stone, Alexis Knudson, Zachary Cox and Ricky Hamel placed third in the 4-H division. The team of Jonas Stenberg, Anna Bjorlie, Joseph Braun and Esther Cox was fifth in the 4-H division. In the FFA division, a team consisting of Jared Peterson, Joseph Peterson, Naomi Cox and Treymayne Kaseman was fifth.

The team from the New England (N.D.) FFA placed sixth in the FFA division.

About 25 teams from North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana competed in the annual event Oct. 10.

Range judging involves assessing rangeland for livestock production and protection of natural resources. This year’s participants were required to identify 30 plants in their natural setting; take a quiz on features of plant anatomy; identify three ecological sites by soil type, topography and geography; complete a range planning simulation map that calculated stocking rates and determined best management practices; evaluate range plants for the amount of grazing on them compared with their potential growth; and visually appraise a 50-foot by 50-foot area of rangeland for the vegetation on it compared with Natural Resource Conservation Service specifications.
