October 28, 2004 NDSU Extension Service Starts Stretching Web Site The North Dakota State University Extension Service has launched a Web site on stretching for better health. “Did you know we are supposed to take a 20-second break for every 20 minutes of computer work we do?” asked Julie Garden-Robinson, an Extension food and nutrition specialist who worked on the Web site. The Stretching Toward Better Health Web site, www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/health.htm, provides information on types of stretching, how to stretch, precautions and muscle groups, as well as a sample exercise record people can use to keep track of their stretching. The Web site also has video demonstrations of stretching exercises for various parts of the body and exercises people can do while sitting at their desk or at home in a straight chair. In addition, the site lists links to reliable health, nutrition and exercise resources. “It has some very good basic stretching exercises for all ages,” said Donna Terbizan, a professor in the NDSU Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences Department who also helped develop the Web site. She said the next step is to add resistance and cardiovascular training exercises because not everyone has access to or can afford to belong to a health club. This section would include tips on using household items to help people exercise without having to leave home. One example is filling plastic milk jugs with sand to make weights. ### Sources:
