Tax Program for Farmers Scheduled for Nov. 30

A "Tax Management for Ag Producers" program will be offered to agricultural producers and tax preparers from 9 a.m. to noon CST on Tuesday, Nov. 30, at 11 interactive video sites in North Dakota.

The program, sponsored by the North Dakota State University Extension Service and the Internal Revenue Service, will feature presentations by Gay Blazek, Internal Revenue Service agent, Fargo; Steve Eckroth, Eide Bailly, Bismarck; Brenda Laub, Farm Credit Services, Valley City; Steve Troyer, Farm Accounting and Tax Service, Fargo; and Terry Knoepfle, Department of Accounting and Information Systems, NDSU, Fargo.

Topics include health savings accounts, deferral of income, section 179 and the special depreciation allowance. Farm income averaging strategies will be presented for different situations, such as college or retirement planning. Farm Service Agency payments and planning issues will be detailed. The IRS will explain the reporting of CRP income, audit priorities, changes in IRS examinations and abusive tax avoidance transactions. Also, farm transition planning issues, such as business organization, combination rental/sales strategies, and dad becoming a landlord and employees with benefits will be discussed.

Four question and answer periods are scheduled during the three-hour program. Pre-registration is required, as seating is limited. The cost for the program and materials is $10.

Interactive video sites for the program are at Bismarck State College; Memorial Building, Devils Lake; Artzen Building, Minot State University, Bottineau; Dickinson State University; NDSU, Fargo; University of North Dakota, Grand Forks; the State Hospital, Jamestown; North Dakota State College of Science, Wahpeton; and the NDSU Research Extension Centers in Langdon, Minot and Williston.
