Soybean and Field Pea Meeting Scheduled for Dec. 14 in Carrington

The North Dakota State University Extension Service has organized a soybean and field pea meeting for Tuesday, Dec. 14, at the NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center to provide production and economic information for farmers and crop advisers.

Event registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. The registration fee is $10 per person, which covers refreshments, a noon meal and other meeting expenses. A total of 5.5 Certified Crop Adviser continuing education credits have been requested for this event.

The morning’s educational program, beginning at 8:45, will focus on soybeans. Research and recommendations will be provided on topics such as variety selection and performance, plant nitrogen nutrition with an emphasis on seed inoculation and growing-season management strategies. Soybean economics, with an emphasis on soybean production costs and returns, will also be discussed.

Field peas will be discussed beginning at 1 p.m. Topics include economics and marketing, variety selection, weed and disease management and harvest management. The pea session will end with a grower and industry panel, which will share tips on successful pea production.

NDSU speakers include Duane Berglund, extension agronomist, and Greg Endres, Bob Henson and Blaine Schatz, Carrington center agronomists. Steve Metzger, North Dakota Farm Business Management Program area coordinator, will provide information on pea economics. The program also will include industry and grower perspectives provided by Tom Frappier, Pioneer; Francis Leier, Nitragin; David Polries, Dakota Dry Bean; Clif Isendorf, Bottineau County farmer; Mark Becker, Eddy County farmer; and Adam Spelhaug, Pulse USA.
