Rancher’s Making Bottom-line Adjustments Scheduled for Dec. 14 and 15

A symposium titled “Rancher’s Making Bottom-line Adjustments” is scheduled for Dec. 14 and 15 at the Seven Seas in Mandan, N.D. Participants will have the opportunity to listen to regional experts on several issues concerning the beef cattle industry.

The program will kick off with a social at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 14. Wade Moser, North Dakota Stockmen’s Association; Kris Ringwall, North Dakota State University Dickinson Research Extension Center; and Susan Keller, North Dakota Board of Animal Health; will facilitate an animal identification discussion.

Following 9:30 registration and a welcome on Wednesday morning, the first speaker is Jim Robb, Livestock Marketing Information Center. His presentation will focus on the future outlook for cattle prices and beef demand. After Robb, presidents of the North Dakota and Saskatchewan Stockmen’s Associations will speak about Canadian border issues, BSE and trade.

The afternoon program consists of two breakout sessions led by academic and industry professionals from North and South Dakota. From 1 to 3 p.m., participants will be able to choose three out of four half hour sessions. Presentations include “Reducing Labor Inputs on Ranching Operations,” “Conservation Easements-Making Your Management Practices Pay,” “Planning for Next Year’s Forage Production,” and “Bovine Viral Diarrhea.”

From 3:30 to 5:30, options include “Creative Ways to Source Labor on Your Ranching Operation,” “A Commercial Cattleman’s Perspective on Adding Value to Feeder Calves,” “Sourcing and Selecting Replacement Females,” and “Water Quality and It’s Impact on Trace Mineral Requirements.”

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged and available until Dec. 8. The fee is $20 (includes materials, noon meal and break). The fee will increase to $25 after the Dec. 8 deadline, and registration will be limited on a first come, first serve basis. A block of rooms are reserved at the Seven Seas until Dec. 1.
