November 29, 2004 Upcoming Irrigation Workshops For the last couple of years there has been a nationwide move toward using more efficient irrigation systems, says Tom Scherer, Extension agricultural engineer at North Dakota State University. “In many states, previously surface (sometimes called gravity) irrigated lands now have center pivots. Water conservation and labor are driving forces behind the conversions, and much of the funding has been provided on a cost-share basis by the Natural Resource Conservation Service’s Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP).” In North Dakota, cost-share for irrigation through EQIP has been available for only two years, but already has made a significant impact. The irrigation portion of EQIP will be an important highlight of two upcoming irrigation workshops. The first workshop will be held on Thursday, Dec. 9, at the Best Western Ramkota Inn, Bismarck, in conjunction with the North Dakota Water Users Convention. The NDSU Extension Service, the Missouri Slope Irrigation Development Association, the North Dakota Irrigation Association (NDIA) and the North Dakota Water Users are sponsoring the workshop. The morning session will have presentations centered on working with the EQIP program. The afternoon session will feature the livestock revenue protection program, reduced tillage under irrigation, crop production updates and Bureau of Reclamation irrigation programs. The irrigation workshop on Tuesday, Dec. 21, is at the county office building in Grand Forks. Topics include an update on potato production, tile drainage, EQIP, condition of water resources in the area, irrigated potato research results, sprinkler uniformity and aquifer water quality concerns. Participants can register at the door. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. for both workshops. The registration fee is $20 at Bismarck, and there is no registration fee at Grand Forks. For more information, contact your county office of the NDSU Extension Service or call Extension Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at (701) 231-7236.
