December 9, 2004 NDSU to Offer Online Tree Pathology Course North Dakota State University is offering a plant pathology course through the Internet beginning Monday, Jan. 10, 2005. The 3-credit, 16-week course will allow participants to gain the knowledge and skills they need to manage diseases that attack forest trees, shade trees and woody horticultural plants. “The material covered in the course is nearly identical to a traditional classroom section, but students can participate anytime or anywhere,” said Mike Kangas, forest health specialist in the Plant Pathology Department. "Although the course is tailored to people who have professional involvement in horticulture and forestry, the gardening enthusiast may also find the course to be useful." The course is open to a limited number of participants. For more information or to register, contact NDSU’s Distance and Continuing Education division at www.ndsu.edu/DCE or call (701)231-7015 or toll-free at (800) 726-1724. The class is ideal for students who want to pursue a degree or develop some basic horticulture skills but have other activities that hinder them from getting to campus during the week, according to Kangas. “The course will focus on identification, biology and management of tree diseases,” he said. It is being offered on the Internet so students can study on weekends or listen to lectures as their schedules permit. The only requirements are that students have a computer with access to the World Wide Web and an open-minded attitude toward learning in a new way. Tuition waivers cannot be used for this class. ### Source:
