December 16, 2004 Sheep Organization Honors 2 NDSU Officials The North Dakota Lamb and Wool Producers Association has honored two North Dakota State University officials and a Hettinger area couple who raise sheep. The organization presented the Distinguished Service Award to Roger Haugen, the NDSU Extension Service’s assistant director for agriculture and natural resources. The award recognizes Haugen for his years of service and commitment to North Dakota’s sheep industry as an Extension sheep specialist. Tim Faller, director of the Hettinger Research Extension Center, received the Appreciation Award for helping develop the state ram sale in Hettinger and establishing the new state replacement ewe sale. Michael and Brandy Merwin received the Master Sheep Producers Award. The association presented the awards at its annual convention in Mandan on Dec. 3-4. Haugen was an Extension sheep specialist for 26 years before becoming the assistant director for agriculture and natural resources in October. He helped the association develop its annual convention. The organization held the first one in 1980. He also wrote a monthly newsletter for the association from 1979 to 1992 and a bimonthly newsletter from 1998 to November 2004; created the Master Sheep Producers Award in 1979; wrote a pocket guide for sheep producers in 1990 and updated it in 1996; and developed a Web page for the association in 2000. “With Roger stepping down, we thought it was a good time to give him the Distinguished Service Award,” said Brent Stroh, association president. Haugen didn’t expect the honor. ”For the first time, I was speechless,” he said. “The group was actually more than a job for me.” Faller has managed the state ram sale for 29 years. The first replacement ewe sale was held Oct. 2 in Bowman. About 2,000 head were consigned and sold. “It will now continue on as an annual association event,” he said. ### Source:
