NDSU to Offer Distance Education Course on Pest Management

The North Dakota State University Entomology Department will offer a distance education course on integrated pest management concepts.

Gary Brewer, chair of the Entomology Department, will teach the course, which starts Jan. 10. The class will be limited to 10 students.

The course will look at how the environment, society and pest biology affect management of insets, pathogens, weeds and vertebrates. Integrated Management of Pests is an advanced undergraduate and graduate level course. The course is not designed to teach pest management tactics.

The course is computer-based and will be delivered online or via a CD. That means students will be able to participate in the class anywhere they have access to a computer and an Internet connection. Their computer also will need a CD drive, e-mail account, Web browser, Adobe Acrobat Reader and RealOne Player.

The instructor will not interact with the entire group of students at the same time. Students will be responsible for covering the course material on their own time and submitting assignments by e-mail when they are due. Exams and other assessments also will have set due dates. Brewer plans to grade on an A-F scale.

The text for the course is “Concepts in Integrated Pest Management” by Robert F. Norris, Edward P. Caswell-Chen and Marcos Kogan, published in 2003 by Prentice Hall. The most recent price from Amazon.com is $106.20.

Students must have successfully completed General Biology II, General Entomology, Introduction to Plant Pathology and Principles of Weed Science or their equivalent before they can take Integrated Management of Pests. Brewer recommends they also have taken an introductory ecology class.

Students can receive 3 credits for Integrated Management of Pests. These credits will apply toward a university degree the same way as credits from a traditional class. The credits generally are transferable. Continuing education credits will be determined.
