Central Grasslands Research Extension Center to Host Event

North Dakota State University’s Central Grasslands Research Extension Center will host its Grass-n-Beef Research Review on Jan. 19, 2005, at the Legion Hall in Medina.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. with an overview of center developments from Paul Nyren, center director.

A highlight of the day will be a report from South Dakota cattle rancher Jeff Mortenson on the economic returns of prairie restoration. Mortenson operates an 18,000-acre ranch near Pierre. He is scheduled to speak at 2:30 p.m.

Morning sessions will be on using ethanol byproducts in first-calf heifer and steer finishing rations; the effects of implants on yearling heifer performance on pastures under four different grazing intensities; the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education grant; and characteristics and expenditures of participants in the Potholes and Prairie Birding Festival.

Afternoon sessions, which start at 1 p.m., will cover byproduct-based creep feed for nursing beef calves; a five-year study on fertilization of heavily and moderately grazed mixed-grass prairie; soil differences among grazing systems on one soil type; and proactive drought management.

The event is free of charge. Registration is not required.
