Weapons of Mass Destruction and Hazardous Materials Training Available Online

First responders continue to have the opportunity to increase their preparedness levels for a homeland security event by completing an online training course.

This awareness course covers weapons of mass destruction and hazardous materials. Those who have completed the course say it is valuable information for anyone who would like to be better prepared for emergency and hazardous situations.

“It is important that we have first responders from a wide variety of disciplines - fire, law enforcement, emergency medical services, public works and other first responders - complete this online training,” says Doug Friez, North Dakota emergency management director and homeland security coordinator. “This training will aid in protecting these valuable assets and citizens.”

The Web-based course should take no more than four hours to complete. The introductory course provides a basic framework on topics such as identifying hazardous materials and weapons of mass destruction, agency integration, scene management and terrorism. The course consists of a series of slides, which takes learners through the information. Each topic section has a self-assessment for review. Upon successful completion of the final assessment, participants receive a certificate for awareness level training from the North Dakota fire marshal’s office.

“This online course offers a unique opportunity for first responders who have time demands to complete this necessary training on their own schedules,” says North Dakota Fire Marshal Ray Lambert.

The online course was introduced in 2004 and is a cooperative effort of North Dakota Emergency Management, the North Dakota fire marshal’s office and the North Dakota State University Extension Service, and is made possible through a U.S. Department of Justice grant.
