January 20, 2005 2002 Saw Little Growth in the Number of North Dakota Business Establishments The number of businesses in North Dakota totaled 20,422 in 2002, up 1.1 percent from the 20,206 establishments in 2001. This month’s “Economic Briefs,” a monthly publication from the North Dakota State Data Center at North Dakota State University, focuses on the number of North Dakota business establishments, employees and annual payroll as released in “County Business Patterns,” a U.S. Census Bureau publication issued annually. The number of businesses in the state has remained relatively stable since the early 1990s. In contrast, the number of private-sector employees rose consistently during the 1990s. “Unfortunately, we do not have detailed data that will allow us to determine how much of the employee growth during the 1990s was due to business expansion and how much was due to increased part-time work or multiple job holders,” says Richard Rathge, State Data Center director. “However, we will be able to identify these trends in the very near future as a result of our participation in the Local Employment Dynamics Program, a partnership with the Census Bureau and the state’s Job Services.” Private-sector employment for the state as of mid-March 2002 was 253,980, down 1.3 percent from 257,335 in mid-March 2001. Annual total payroll for the state was $6.6 billion, up 1.8 percent from $6.4 billion in 2001. This resulted in an annual payroll per employee of $25,805 in 2002, up 3.2 percent from the $25,012 the year before. Nationally, the annual payroll per employee averaged $35,081 in 2002. The service industry employed the largest portion of the state’s private-sector work force at 43.7 percent, with an average annual payroll per employee of $22,207. Nevada, Florida, Utah and Idaho reported the largest percentage gains in businesses between 2001 and 2002 (5.2 percent, 3.6 percent, 3.4 percent and 3.2 percent, respectively). One state, Massachusetts, reported an overall loss in businesses during the period. ### Source:
