Thorsgard Selected as 79th Little International Agriculturist of the Year

Enoch Thorsgard, Northwood, N.D., has been selected by the North Dakota State University Saddle and Sirloin Club as the 79th Little International Agriculturist of the Year. Each year, the club honors a distinguished leader in North Dakota agriculture who possesses traits members seek to exemplify.

Thorsgard entered the agricultural industry in 1941 when he began farming, raising sheep, haying for his father and hauling cattle for his uncle. In 1942, he married Madeline Wasness. Together they have five children: Grady, John, Carol, Betty and Ruth, 24 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Thorsgard has expanded his operation to a privately owned feedlot where he and his sons feed 6,000 head of cattle and farm 6,000 acres. He is currently a partner in Sunrise Acres and Thorsgard Cattle Co. with his two sons, John and Grady.

Thorsgard has been an active leader in his community and throughout the state. Most notably, he served in the North Dakota House of Representatives as an Appropriations Committee member for 12 years. He has served on boards for the Nodak Insurance Company, Western Grand Forks County Soil Conservation District, North Dakota Heritage Center, Northwood Centennial, Trinity College and Valley Health Center. He also started the Christian Coalition in North Dakota.

He was also one of the first producers to bring Charolais cattle to North Dakota. He has experimented with potato feeds, sugar beet processing byproducts, damaged grain and wheat midds and has used them in an efficient feed ration for cattle.

“Enoch Thorsgard leads others by serving them,” said Suzanne Bowman, former executive director of the North Dakota Christian Coalition. “Whether in the field of agriculture, politics, church life or community affairs, Enoch has demonstrated that a man increases himself as he seeks to build up others.”

Thorsgard will be honored by the Saddle and Sirloin Club the weekend of Feb. 11-12 during the 79th Little International. He will be recognized at the Hall of Fame banquet on Feb. 11th at 6 p.m. in the Doublewood Inn in Fargo, ND. Everyone is welcome to attend.
