Agricultural Drainage Workshops Set for Moorhead, Crookston, Minn

Subsurface tile drainage, planning, design and other agricultural drainage topics will be on the agenda at agricultural drainage design and water management workshops in Moorhead and Crookston, Minn., next month.
For several years, excess water has been a large problem for agricultural producers in eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota. Better drainage methods can help control water on the land and improve crop production.

The first workshop will be Feb. 22 in the Moorhead Area Conference Center at the Courtyard by Marriott (south of the junction of Interstate 94 and U.S. Highway 75). The second workshop will be Feb. 23-24 at the Northland Inn in Crookston.

The workshops will provide information on tile drainage principles, economic factors, design considerations and problem-solving examples with lots of discussion time. They're designed for tile drainage contractors, farmers, landowners, industry staff, crop consultants, and land use and water management decision makers.

Moorhead’s workshop and the first day of the Crookston workshop will cover water management planning, basic tile drainage design concepts and farmer experiences. The second day at Crookston will include hands-on layout and design problems and an update on regional drainage research. An exhibit hall featuring drainage industry displays will be available during workshop breaks.

The University of Minnesota Extension Service, in partnership with the North Dakota State University Extension Service, the Minnesota Land Improvement Contractors Association and industry partners, is sponsoring the workshops.

Pre-registration is required by Feb. 14. To get on the mailing list for a registration flier, contact Jean Spohr at the University of Minnesota’s West Central Research and Outreach Center (WCROC) in Morris at (320) 589-1711 or spohrjm@mrs.umn.edu. Registration forms and program agenda also are available at the University of Minnesota drainage outlet Web site, http://d-outlet.coafes.umn.edu/.

The registration fee for the Moorhead workshop is $75. The fee is $150 for both days of the Crookston workshop. For those planning to attend just one day of the Crookston workshop, the fee is $75 for Feb. 23 and $100 for Feb. 24.
