Muhlenkamp named 79th Little “I” Overall Showmen

North Dakota State University Saddle student Sarah Muhlenkamp won overall showmen honors during the recent Little International held on the NDSU campus. The NDSU Saddle & Sirloin Club has been putting on the weekend event for 79 years. Muhlenkamp is the daughter of Levi and Margaret Muhlenkamp, Bellflower, Calif.

Muhlenkamp is a freshmen majoring in animal science at NDSU. She chose NDSU because of the outstanding sheep program offered.

“I heard the most educated sheep producers have come from the NDSU sheep program and decided to come here because of it,” Muhlenkamp said.

Little “I” is the largest student production and oldest tradition on NDSU’s campus. Over 200 students participated in various events such as beef, dairy, sheep, swine and horse showmanship. Class winners from each species were:

  • Beef: Cody Kreft, Streeter, N.D.
  • Equine: Jessica Stylski, Isanti, Minn.
  • Dairy: Karin Nordling, Hastings, Minn.
  • Sheep: Sarah Muhlenkamp, Bellflower, Calif.
  • Swine: Lindsey Steen, Halsted, Minn.

Class winners from each species competed in a final round-robin showmanship competition. The contestants were judged on their showmanship abilities of all five species.

“I didn’t believe I had won at first,” Muhlenkamp said. “They announced my name, and I was really surprised.”

A ham-curing and lamb lead contest also was included in the weekend’s activities. Jenna Jansen from Breckenridge, Minn., was the winner of the ham-curing contest and Muhlenkamp won this year’s lamb lead contest.

The highlight of the weekend is honoring someone in the agriculture industry who has shown leadership abilities and qualities that Saddle and Sirloin Club members seek to exemplify. The club chose Enoch Thorsgard as this year’s Agriculturist of the Year. Thorsgard runs a family feedlot and farming operation near Northwood, N.D. He has been a leader in his community as well as throughout North Dakota. A banquet was held Friday, Feb. 11 in his honor.

Preparation for the 80th Little International is underway. The show will be held Feb. 10-11, 2006 in Shepperd Arena, NDSU campus. For more information, visit the NDSU Saddle and Sirloin Club Web site at www.acm.ndsu.nodak.edu/S&S.
