March 17, 2005 NDSU Extension Service Range Plants Handbook Still is Available Spring is in the air and range plants soon will be sprouting across North Dakota and Minnesota. The North Dakota State University Extension Service has a handbook, “Selected North Dakota and Minnesota Range Plants,” that can help you identify many of the common range plants you’ll see. The 270-page spiral-bound handbook includes 123 species. The publication contains detailed botanical descriptions, color photos, drawings of plant parts and maps showing where the plants can be found. The book also includes plants’ scientific names, subspecies names and synonyms, and a glossary to help the reader with unfamiliar terms. “Selected North Dakota and Minnesota Range Plants” won the North Dakota Library Association GODORT (Government Documents Round Table) Award for being the most thorough, useful and attractive document for 1997 and 1998. “This publication was designed to give land managers and nature enthusiasts a book to identify flowering plants and grasses in a pasture or during a nature walk,” says Kevin Sedivec, who co-authored the handbook with William Barker. “Each plant narrative describes the value for livestock and wildlife.” Sedivec is an Extension Service range management specialist and associate professor in the NDSU Animal and Range Sciences Department. Barker is a professor in the Animal and Range Sciences Department. The handbook is available through the NDSU Agriculture Communication Distribution Center for $20.50, which includes postage and handling costs.
