NDSU Helps Sponsor Diabetes Curriculum Workshop

The North Dakota State University Extension Service is helping sponsor a workshop on the “Dining with Diabetes” curriculum in Bismarck on May 4-5.

Participants will review the curriculum, which the West Virginia University Extension Service developed, and consider whether to adapt it for use in North Dakota.

The event is open to Extension agents, dietitians, certified diabetes educators and related health professionals. It will be at the Kelly Inn. Preregistration is required because of limited space. The registration deadline is April 20. Attending the event is free of charge.

West Virginia University Extension has used the curriculum for the last seven years to increase awareness of basic nutrition principles in people with diabetes.

“While this curriculum cannot replace medical nutrition therapy provided by those trained in dietetics, it can provide basic education to people with diabetes to increase their awareness of the importance of diet for disease management,” says Jane Edwards, an NDSU Extension nutrition and health specialist.

Workshop attendees also will discuss the prevalence of diabetes in North Dakota and access to medical providers.

The number of North Dakotans with diabetes increased 72 percent, from 3.6 percent to 6.2 percent of the population, between 1994 and 2003. Many areas of rural North Dakota have few or no trained medical personnel, Edwards says.

The workshop begins at 12:30 p.m. May 4 with registration. Featured speakers will include Guendoline Brown, the West Virginia University Extension nutrition and health specialist who developed the “Dining with Diabetes” curriculum, and Karen Newton, a West Virginia University Extension program specialist who is the “Dining with Diabetes” program manager.

Other presenters are Stephen Pickard, an epidemiologist with the North Dakota Health Department; Susan Mormann, cardiovascular health program coordinator for the state Health Department; Donna Bernhardt, a Grand Forks County Extension agent; and Edwards.

For more information, to register and to request disability-related accommodations, contact Edwards at the NDSU Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences Department, 351 EML Hall, Centennial Blvd., Fargo, ND 58105-5057, by fax at (701) 231-7453 or by phone at (701) 231-7478.

The state Health Department’s diabetes prevention and control program in the Division of Chronic Disease, along with the American Diabetes Association’s state affiliate, GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals and Northern Canola Growers, also are sponsoring the workshop.
