April 1, 2005 NDSU Extension Presents Grain Entrapment Prevention Workshops The North Dakota State University Extension Service, in cooperation with Workforce Safety and Insurance, will offer 15 workshops during April and May on preventing people from being trapped in grain. The one-day workshops are targeted toward grain handlers and workers at grain elevator companies. Locations and dates are: Ottertail Electric,
Rugby - April 12 “As many as 27 workers have become trapped in flowing grain situations in the area, 15 in North Dakota and eight in Minnesota, since 1990,” said George Maher, NDSU Extension agricultural safety specialist. Eighteen of those victims died in the bin, or shortly thereafter. Others suffered permanent brain injuries from lack of oxygen. Grain entrapment can be prevented if grain workers recognize the hazards and react properly, Maher said. The workshops, which will consist of PowerPoint presentations, videotapes and a grain entrapment demonstration, will cover signs of potential entrapment situations and rescue strategies and concerns. The workshops will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are free of charge. Lunch will not be provided. Participants should bring a pencil and paper. Meeting room capacity is limited, so preregistration is required. Contact Debbi McDonough at dmcdonou@ndsuext.nodak.edu or (701) 231-7236. ### Source: George
