North Dakota Horseman to Hold 2 Clinics at NDSU Equine Center

John Hovde, a professional horseman from northwestern North Dakota, will hold two clinics at the North Dakota State University Equine Center in Fargo this spring.

Hovde, of Epping, will conduct a horsemanship clinic April 30-May 1. His combined stockmanship and horsemanship clinic is set for May 20-22.

Both sessions focus on riders teaching themselves to communicate effectively with their horse.

“A horseman says, ‘I am going to teach myself how to ask this horse to do something,’” notes Hovde, also an adjunct professor at NDSU.

In the first clinic, Hovde will help riders become effective leaders for their horse. They’ll learn how to express their wishes and expectations to the horse and solve communication, behavioral and other problems.

The clinic runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 30 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 1. The Equine Center is at the North Dakota Horse Park, 5180 19th Ave. N.

Riders interested in taking this clinic should register immediately since the number of participants is limited. The cost is $200 per rider. Riders need to provide their own horse.

The second clinic will focus on handling cattle and putting good horsemanship and stockmanship to work. Hovde will teach a multidisciplinary approach, including cattle cutting, sorting and penning, and how the horse, rider and cattle can work together smoothly. Riders will be able to do a lot of individual work on cattle during all three days of the clinic.

The clinic will run from noon to 8 p.m. May 20, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 21 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 22.

Riders interested in this session also should register soon. The deadline is May 12. The cost is $300 per rider. Riders must bring their own horse.

The cost for people who want to watch any of Hovde’s sessions is $20 per day. They may pay at the door.
