NDSU Student Places at National Horse Show

Ashley Flick, a North Dakota State University equine studies student, took third in advanced Western horsemanship at the recent Intercollegiate Horse Show Association’s national championships in Sunbury, Ohio.

She received a jacket, medallion and large ribbon.

“I am very proud of Ashley’s accomplishments,” said Bobbi Bingeman, the NDSU equestrian team’s coach. “She has grown a lot in her skills and abilities as a horsewoman and competitor. She is a very good representative of our entire NDSU IHSA equestrian team.”

Flick, a junior, is from Chaseley, N.D.

The 2004-05 school year was the team’s first full season of competing in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association.

“This year we matched every goal we set out to achieve as a team,” Bingeman said. “We fielded a full Western and hunt-seat team all season. We were ranked among the top four teams consistently all season. We had NDSU riders qualify for the postseason championship rounds.”

Ken Odde, head of the university’s Animal and Range Sciences Department, said, “The IHSA team is an important component of the growing NDSU equine program. The accomplishments of Bobbi Bingeman and her IHSA team are truly remarkable, considering that this is the first year that NDSU fielded a team.”

Riders must earn 36 points during the regular season to qualify for the regional championships. They must place first or second at the regionals to advance to the zone championships. They also must come in first or second in the zone championships to qualify for the national championships. Riders at the national event compete against as many as 18 people for a title.

NDSU had four riders quality for regionals – Flick, Bethany Windjue, Morgan Sager and Felicia Lamb. Sager, Lamb and Flick advanced to the zone championships. Flick won the zone championships to earn her trip to the nationals.

Bingeman said the team already is setting goals for next year. They are:

  • Be the top ranked Western team in Zone 9, Region 3
  • Be a top-three hunt team in Zone 9, Region 3
  • Qualify Western and hunt riders for nationals
  • Help get some of the open riders into the running for the American Quarter Horse Association Cup and Cacchione Cup. These two national awards go to the high-point Western and hunt-seat riders.
