June 9, 2005 Learn More About the EPA Air Emissions Consent Agreement North Dakota pork, dairy and poultry producers have until July 1 to voluntarily sign the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) air emissions consent agreement, according to Ron Wiederholt, North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center livestock waste management specialist. Two meetings are scheduled for North Dakota pork, dairy and poultry producers to learn more about the air emissions consent agreement and how it may affect their operations. The meetings will be held in Towner from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, and Valley City from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 24. The Towner meeting will be held in the lower level of the NDSU Extension office at 314 Main St. S. The Valley City meeting will be held in the Barnes County Courthouse basement meeting room at 230 4th St. N.W. “The EPA air emissions consent agreement is a voluntary agreement between pork, egg, poultry and dairy producers and the EPA to protect them from liability for past air emissions, as well as during a two-year study and policy development period conducted through 2007,” Wiederholt says. “Along with signing the agreement, producers will pay a nominal penalty and comply with the air laws after the study.” At the meetings, information will be given on what the agreement entails, how it came about and how it may affect specific livestock producers. Carrie Tengman, National Pork Board environmental services director, and John Thorne, C&M CapitoLink, Washington, D.C., will participate in the meetings by teleconference to answer questions. These meetings are jointly sponsored by the North Dakota Pork Board and the NDSU Extension Service. The meetings are free and open to the public. For more information on the meetings, contact Wiederholt at (701) 652-2951 or Bridget Johnson at (701) 483-2306. The National Pork Producers Council has more information about the EPA air emissions consent agreement on its Web site at www.nppc.org/hot_topics/airemissions.html. ### Source: Ron
