North Central Research Extension Center Canola Day Set for June 29

The North Dakota State University North Central Research Extension Center in Minot will hold a Canola Day program from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, June 29.

First, Vern Hofman, associate professor in the NDSU Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department; Kristi Tostenson, a research specialist in the same department; and Skip Hauth, president of the BioEconomy Development Corp., Grand Island, N.Y., will discuss biodiesel fuel.

The North Central Research Extension Center is involved in a project to demonstrate that biodiesel made from canola oil works. The NDSU Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department converted canola oil into biodiesel for the project.

Following the biodiesel presentation, Canola Day participants will have a chance to get into the field and hear from various presenters. The topics and presenters are:

  • Weather – Kent McKay, area NDSU Extension Service crop systems specialist from Minot
  • Controlling volunteer canola – Brian Jenks, North Central Research Extension Center weed scientist
  • Canola rotations/disease management – Jenks, McKay and Denise Markle, center research specialist
  • Canola industry news – Barry Coleman, Northern Canola Growers
  • Straight combining canola – Jenks, McKay
  • Canola insects – Jan Knodel, North Central Research Extension Center entomologist

Lunch will be provided. At 1 p.m., Northern Canola Growers will sponsor golf at the Minot Country Club.

The Canola Day program is open to the public and free of charge. For more information, contact Jenks at (701) 857-7677 or bjenks@ndsuext.nodak.edu.
